Unlike translation, which is written, interpreting is carried out orally. Its main function is to enable oral communication between people who speak different languages. We offer several interpreting services so that our clients can choose the one that best fits their communication situation.
In this type of interpreting, the speaker delivers the speech and then allows the interpreter to convey the oral translation. The speaker can deliver the full speech and then let the interpreter convey the full version in the target language. In these cases, the interpreter usually takes down notes because of the length of the speeches. In other cases, the speaker can insert pauses while speaking so that the interpreter can interpret at the same pace. The latter is the preferred option in most situations because it makes comprehension easier for foreign listeners, who can keep up with the conversation along with local listeners, and avoids possible distractions or misunderstandings. This type of interpreting is often used in press conferences, speeches and presentations, among other contexts.
It is a variation of simultaneous interpreting carried out in a low voice, where the interpreter is near the participants who do not speak the target language and whispers the speech to them without interfering with the delivery of the source language message. This type of interpreting is often used when only a small group of people do not understand the speaker's language and is typical of civil and religious weddings, interviews and training courses, among other contexts.
Interpreting at the Civil Registry
In Argentina, when civil weddings take place, pursuant to Section 190 of the Civil Code and Section 50 of the Civil Marriage Act No. 14,586, if one of the spouses does not speak Spanish, the proceeding has to be done in the presence of a sworn translator. In these contexts, the interpreter can use consecutive interpreting, in which the judge will pause for the interpreter to intervene, or whispered interpreting, which is mostly used in cases where only the spouse in question does not speak the national language, but the rest of the people present do, so as not to interrupt the ceremony.
At Palabras del Plata, our sworn translators are highly experienced in weddings so they will be able to help you in order for the ceremony to develop correctly.
Here the interpreter will not deliver the oral translation in only one language, but in two. This type of interpreting involves groups of two or more people (five at the most) who speak two different languages. The interpreter does not use any special equipment, but stands next to the speakers and conveys the speeches in the appropriate language while they speak, making some sort of "liaison" among the different participants' dialogues. The speakers have to make brief statements; that is to say, they have to stop long enough to allow the interpreter to deliver the message in the target language without having to take down notes and, thus, avoiding the omission of important information. This type of interpreting is very useful when the audience should pay particular attention to the speech details, for example, in work meetings or short training courses where the operation of certain software or machinery is explained.
