Sworn translations

What does the figure of a sworn translator imply?

A sworn translator is a professional whose duty involves translating texts and documents from the national language into the foreign language and vice versa, in the cases required by law or upon request of the interested party.

Every sworn translator must be registered in the CTPCBA - Colegio de Traductores Públicos de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires [Sworn Translators Association of the City of Buenos Aires]. This means that the professional has registered his/her signature at such institution and owns a registration number that empowers him/her to exercise the profession; that is to say, that the translator is fit to sign the documents he/she translates and, in doing so, vouch for their content.

Which documents require a sworn translation?

Every document that is submitted to foreign departments or entities, or to public, judicial or administrative agencies of the National Government or the Government of the City of Buenos Aires must be accompanied by the corresponding translation to the national language. Here are some examples of this type of documents:

  • Marriage certificates / divorce records
  • Notarial certificates
  • Criminal record certificates
  • Diplomas / transcripts / studies certificates
  • ID cards
  • Deeds
  • Birth and death certificates
  • Passports
  • Powers

In some cases, the sworn translation of other type of documents may also be required:

  • Balance sheets
  • Contracts and agreements in general
  • Personal documentation
  • Articles of incorporation and by-laws
  • Commercial invoices and reports

We advise our clients to get in touch with the authority or entity that demands the sworn translation, so that they can find out about the submitting requirements before entrusting the job to us.

Delivery terms and deadline

The deadline for the delivery of a sworn translation is agreed in the same way as for a standard translation, except that in this case the legalization time will also be taken into account. Depending on the client’s urgency —according to which he/she can ask for a simple or an urgent legalization— the length and difficulty of the text, a delivery date is agreed together with the client.

As regards the delivery terms, Palabras del Plata will deliver the translation to the client personally (as long as he/she lives within the area of the City of Buenos Aires), by postal mail or messenger service, depending on the client’s urgency. In the event that the client lives outside the area of the City of Buenos Aires or abroad, delivery by courier, private postal service or any other method suggested by the client could also be agreed.

It is important for the clients to bear in mind that, so that we can perform a sworn translation, it is essential that they provide us with the original documentation, which we will return with an overstamping, attached to the sworn translation. This is the procedure required by law for the submission of every sworn translation.
